Spanish newspaper found the Madrid club’s logo pasted on Camp Nou scoreboard
Barcelona seems to be back to their winning ways as the Catalan giants thrashed SD Eibar 5-0 at home.
As the Cules celebrated Messi’s hattrick, AS picked up a tiny Real Madrid logo pasted on the Camp Nou scoreboard. This was directly below where club president Josep Bartomeu was sitting.
Discontent with Bartomeu
The club members elected Catalan businessman Josep Bartomeu as their president in 2014. He was elected as the previous president Sandro Rosell resigned due to the Neymar transfer scandal. Ever since then, the fans and members of the club have a love-hate relationship with him.
Although his early tenure was fruitful, with some successful high-profile signings. Barcelona also won their second treble in 2015. However, problems started brewing soon after as the club did not sign any replacement for the departing Dani Alves. This left a very unbalanced squad with a strong attack and midfield, but a weak defence. The backup defenders underperforming did not help the team either.
After failing to win the 2016-17 La Liga and bottling a Champions League quarter-final clash against Atletico Madrid, Enrique left the club. The manager was followed by Neymar who moved to Paris Saint-Germain. Ousmane Dembele and Phillipe Coutinho joined the club in the same season. However, both of them have been massive disappointments. The Cules blame the board, and by extension, the president for such disappointing transfers.
Reports emerged last week that Bartomeu had hired a number of social media websites to defame Messi, Pique, and other important players, and post propaganda to help him win the 2021 presidential elections. This further enraged the already disgruntled fans, who were unhappy with the sell of Abel Ruiz and Carles Perez. Although Bartomeu called a press conference and denied such allegations, he really did not find many takers among the fans.
In such a situation, fans are speculating that pasting the Madrid logo directly below where Bartomeu was sitting might be a show of dissent. Many members have taken to Twitter to call for his resignation.
With Bartomeu in the audience, Barcelona thrashed Eibar 5-0 at home to reach the top of the league table.
Messi had been facing a goal drought but came back in his own style by scoring a first-half hattrick. The little magician got his fourth goal deep into the second half. The captain’s poker was followed by a goal from Arthur.
The emergency signing Martin Braithwaite impressed in his debut. The Dane contributed to the final two goals. Barca boss Quique Setien claimed that he had exceeded the expectations.
As Real Madrid lost to Levante later in the day, Barcelona sits at the top of the table, leading by two points. The win would provide the Blaugranas with the important momentum and motivation for clashes against Napoli midweek and Real Madrid in the weekend.
