Former England batsman reveals Virat Kohli sent a letter to BCCI at midnight before 5th Test

The eventful Test series between India, led by Virat Kohli and England came to an anti-climactic end with the fifth Test being cancelled. The players in the Indian camp expressed their concern about having to play in such a compromised environment.

Trouble began midway through the fourth test when Ravi Shastri tested positive for the virus. He ended up in isolation along with almost all of the support staff. Assistant physio Yogesh Parmar contracting the disease ended up being the last straw for the players.

The fate of the series still remains unknown. The prospect of a Test played in the next year’s tour is on the table. Whether that contest is expected to be treated as part of the series or as a separate one-off Test remains a raging debate between the two cricket boards.

The majority of the discussions that happened behind the scenes remains a mystery. The IPL is also cited as a reason behind players’ hesitance to take the field for the final Test.

David Gower sheds some light on the cancellation of the Test by Kohli and co

Former England batsman David Gower claimed that Indian skipper Virat Kohli sent a letter to the BCCI at midnight. The letter is expected to convey the players’ reluctance to play in the final Test.

Gower added that he would like to know more about what happened. He believes that there might have been more private conversations between the board and players.

Speaking with Cricket.com, he said: “Virat Kohli sending letters to the BCCI at midnight, the day before – the whole sequence of events needs explaining a little bit better,”. Gower also linked the series of events to the IPL as well.

He feels that Kohli holds Test cricket in very high regard but refuses to rule out the impact of the cash-rich league. The players might have feared contracting the disease and being unavailable for the franchise and losing their pay as a result.
