IPL 2022: Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) has had a good season gone to their favour in the fourteenth edition. The Virat Kohli led side was highly dominant in the first phase and the second phase as well.
However, the RCB’s men choked at a very bad time when it was a do or die situation. They lost the first eliminator game of the playoffs against Kolkata Knight Riders. It was one-sided domination that RCB did not expect.
The middle-order seemed to have failed once again while the likes of Ab de Villiers, Glenn Maxwell could hardly impress. As a result of such a performance, RCB could only take 138 in the first innings. And this was a cakewalk total for Kolkata Knight Riders.
Moreover, this was an emotional moment for Virat Kohli as it eventually became his last game as the RCB captain. However, he had hoped to win an IPL trophy but unfortunately, that will only be a distant dream now.
The 33-year-old announced the stepping down from the Royal Challengers Bangalore captaincy at the beginning of the second phase.
Moreover, he also announced the stepping down from the T20 captaincy for India a month before IPL. Some say it was Virat Kohli’s own decision while some say he was kicked out by the BCCI herself.
However, the reason was to ease off the extra bit of pressure that comes with the captaincy. Virat Kohli has not had form in the Indian colours for quite some time now.
Plus he does not even have a century from the past two years across the three formats of cricket. He has not been successful as a batsman since the Pink ball test against Bangladesh.
IPL 2022: Michael Vaughan suggests his pick as the next RCB captain
But the RCB management is in a dilemma to choose a new captain. They did not expect their current captain to step down so despite the lack of trophies.
However, they will be decided after the conclusion of the mega auction that is set to take place in December. The mega auction is being held due to the onset of two new teams from the next edition.
The former England captain and cricket commentator Michael Vaughan has shared his opinion. He said, “It’s just that who’s got the character and personality to go in there and captain Virat Kohli, and that’s got to be a skilful person, who knows himself, knows T20 cricket very cleverly, knows how to manage people and particular someone like Virat Kohli.”
Michael Vaughan threw an English name as the next RCB captain. He said, “I will throw you a name. This name is out-of-the-box. He’s from another franchise and they may retain him, but I would choose Jos Buttler to go out there and be RCB’s captain. He’s got it in him to be like MS Dhoni. I do not doubt him.”
