ISCC

International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC)

The International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) is an independent initiative established in 2006, focused on certifying the biofuel industry.

The ISCC certification program encompasses a variety of sustainable raw materials, including sustainable agricultural biomass, non-biological renewable materials, recycled carbon materials, as well as biogenic wastes and residues.

ISCC has become the leading certification system in the EU for assessing the sustainability of biomass raw materials, production processes, and supply chains, ensuring supply chains are sustainable, traceable, deforestation-free, and environmentally friendly.

ISCC features

To ensure the production of sustainable biomass, used in various sectors such as food, animal feed, chemicals, and energy, ISCC focuses on six different aspects.
Biodiversity respect
ISCC sets strict criteria for biomass production areas and prohibits certified users from altering the state of areas with high biodiversity value or high carbon content.
Environmental resources protection
ISCC promotes the adoption of good agricultural practices to prevent contamination, degradation, and depletion of environmental resources resulting from agricultural and forestry activities.
Worker well-being
ISCC promotes safe working conditions on farms by implementing health, safety, and hygiene policies and emphasizing the importance of training for the well-being and protection of workers.
Rural and social development
Focuses on rural and social development, based on the labor standards of the International Labour Organization (ILO).
Compliance and legal adherence
ISCC ensures that biomass production complies with regional and national laws, as well as international agreements, while avoiding conflicts of interest and corruption.
Farm development
ISCC emphasizes the importance of efficient management practices to ensure continuous improvement in farms and plantations.

Promoting sustainable biomass production with ISCC certificates

As an ecolabel, ISCC promotes the production of raw materials respecting environmental, social, and economic principles.

Agricultural and forestry biomass
ISCC certifies the sustainability of biomass sources from agriculture and forests, including crops, wood, and other products derived from these resources
Biogenic wastes and residues
The ecolabel also evaluates the sustainability of biogenic wastes and residues from industrial or agricultural processes.
Circular and renewable materials
ISCC extends to circular materials, including recycled ones, and renewable materials, such as biofuels.
Greenhouse gas emissions reduction
As a sustainable certification, ISCC focuses on identifying and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, advocating for their reduction, crucial in combating climate change.
No Deforestation
ISCC is committed to preserving forests, carbon-rich lands, and biodiversity. The goal is to build a deforestation-free world by promoting sustainable agriculture that respects human rights, labor rights, and land rights.
