Naturemade is a Swiss quality and sustainability label, established in 1999 and managed by the Association VUE (Verein für Umweltgerechte Energie).

Naturemade is an ecolabel specific to Guarantees of Origin: it is awarded to renewable energy production plants (electricity, heat/cooling, biomethane), as well as to suppliers of these energies to end consumers.

The Naturemade label brings together environmental organizations, energy companies, and consumer associations such as WWF, Pro Natura, and the Swiss Consumer Forum.

The Ecolab sets a benchmark for quality with strict standards and rigorous specifications. With a network of certified production plants across Europe, Naturemade actively contributes to the energy transition of the electricity mix.

Naturemade features

This ecolabel establishes two levels of certification:
Naturmade
This certification level endorses facilities that generate energy (electricity, heating/cooling, biomethane) solely from renewable sources. Thus, a production facility receiving Naturemade certification provides 100% renewable energy.
Naturmade star
This certification level endorses facilities that generate ecological energy, meaning that on top of being produced from renewable sources, Naturemade star-labeled energy must also meet specific sustainability and environmental impact criteria.

Naturemade certification criteria

Naturemade certification encompasses a broad spectrum of renewable and ecological energy products, including energy production facilities, natural gas, and certain electric-powered products like electric vehicles.

The certification criteria are based on:
  • Energy derived 100% from renewable sources
  • Avoidance of genetically modified organisms (GMOs)
  • Protection of soil fertility
  • Adherence to various environmental sustainability requirements.

Naturemade Star certification criteria

Naturemade Star represents a higher level of Naturemade certification, emphasizing electricity production from renewable sources while adhering to enhanced criteria for management, governance, and environmental impact.

The certification criteria are based on:
  • Energy derived 100% from renewable sources
  • Avoidance of genetically modified organisms (GMOs)
  • Protection of soil fertility
  • Traceable origin: The electricity’s origin must be clearly identified and verified, both within the production facilities and from third-party suppliers.
  • Responsible financial commitment: For each kWh sold under the Naturemade Star label, a financial contribution is made to a fund dedicated to environmental improvement projects.
