The International Renewable Energy Certificate (I-REC) is a global framework developed by the International REC Standard Foundation to trace and authenticate the use of electricity produced from renewable sources globally.
This system has been introduced in various countries across Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America, where no similar mechanism exist to certify renewable energy use on a global scale.
The I-REC standard serves as a complementary mechanism to the European Guarantees of Origin and the American RECs.
It relies on standardized, reliable, and internationally recognized methods to ensure the traceability of both production and consumption of electricity derived from renewable sources.
How does the I-REC system work?
Each I-REC represents one megawatt-hour (MWh) of electricity produced from renewable sources such as solar, hydro, wind, biomass, and geothermal energy. The dedicated electronic I-REC registry manages the issuance, transfer, and redemption of certificates, ensuring reliable and transparent traceability while preventing double counting.

Why incorporate I-RECs into your decarbonization journey?
1
I-RECs enable you to make reliable and verifiable declarations about your use of electricity from renewable sources. They help you achieve your environmental objectives and demonstrate your commitment to the energy transition of the electricity mix.
2
I-RECs help finance the energy transition to clean power in less developed nations by providing much needed support to the deployment of renewable energy in these growing markets.
3
I-RECs, like Guarantees of Origin and American RECs, are recognized market tools that certify and trace the consumption of electricity from renewable sources, adhering to the GHG Protocol’s scope 2 guidelines. These mechanisms help to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and build a more planet-friendly future.
