What is a REGO?
Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGO) are certificates granted to producers of energy from renewable sources in the United Kingdom. Established in 2002, the system is designed to encourage the growth of renewable energy sources and ensure full transparency in the energy market.
It encompasses a variety of clean energy sources, including wind, solar, hydro, biomass, and geothermal.
How does the REGO system work?
One REGO equals one megawatt-hour (MWh) of renewable energy that has been generated and injected into the electrical grid. Managed by Ofgem, the UK’s energy regulator, this program ensures that only certified producers can claim REGOs.
The accreditation process involves a thorough evaluation of the environmental and technical qualifications of the power plant seeking certification. REGOs thus provide transparency and traceability in renewable electricity production, bolstering consumer confidence in green energy.
