The GHG Protocol classifies greenhouse gas emissions into three categories known as scopes.

  • Scope 1: This includes emissions directly generated by the organization through its activities from company owned assets such as factories, installations, warehouses, offices, and vehicles.
  • Scope 2: This covers emissions related to the organization’s consumption of purchased electricity, heat, or steam used in its facilities and vehicle fleets.
  • Scope 3: This encompasses all other indirect emissions that occur within the company’s value chain, both upstream and downstream.

How to become net zero?

Organizations start by quantifying and addressing emissions related to scopes 1 and 2. At a later stage, they incorporate emissions from activities related to scope 3.

The process to become net zero requires taking into account all the activities of an organization to assess its carbon impact.

1. CREATE YOUR ACTION PLAN 

Pledge to reduce your footprint following scientific guidelines by establishing science-based emission reduction targets that cover all scopes. This demonstrates the level of your climate ambition and supports the objectives of the Paris Agreement.   

Setting both near-term and long-term climate targets is crucial for achieving meaningful GHG emissions reductions. While near-term targets prompt immediate action, setting long term climate targets such as decarbonizing your supply chain or achieving net zero involve comprehensive and strategic changes aligning with the overarching goal of limiting global warming to well below 2°C.  

Based on the carbon inventory, you formulate an action plan to reduce your corporate greenhouse gas emissions. This plan acts as a roadmap to achieve your established targets while elevating your corporate sustainability image.

2. Implementation

Following your climate action plan, implement strategies to reduce your organization’s emissions.  

  • Carry out initiatives to reduce emissions in Scope 1 and Scope 2 by enhancing energy efficiency, opting for renewable energy sources, transitioning to electric vehicles, and other similar measures.  
  • To tackle indirect emissions from Scope 3, launch a program to engage suppliers to reduce their emissions and improve their sustainability practices.
